Christenson dedicates the book to his students, and indeed my undergraduates found this book both interesting and easy to understand, and they appreciated Christenson’s thorough treatment of the socio-historical context in which this play was first Recorded at St Martins School, summer 1986Taken from the original Carlton Hall Studios VHS recording Plautus’ works, loosely adapted from Greek plays, established a truly Roman drama in the Latin language. Although his work presents scholars with a variety of textual problems since the manuscripts by which his plays survive are corrupt and sometimes incomplete, the achievement of his comic genius has had lasting significance in the history of Western literature and drama.

A brilliant comic poet, Plautus moved beyond writing Latin versions of Greek plays to create a uniquely Roman cultural experience worthy of contemporary scholarship. Titus Maccius Plautus (c. 254 – 184 BC), commonly known as Plautus, was a Roman playwright of the Old Latin period. His comedies are the earliest works in Latin literature to have survived in their entirety.
