He was born into a Jewish family from Alsace, but changed his name during World War II while working with the French Resistance. The group , which inaugurated modern cinema, included Jean-Pierre Melville, Francois Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Claude Chabrol, Agnes Varda, Alain Resnais, Jacques Rivette and Louis Malle. Melville, Truffaut and Malle have died, but the others remain productive and creative in their 80s. A voracious cinephile in his early youth, Jean-Pierre Grumbach's daily intake of films was interrupted by the Second World War when he enlisted in the FFL (Forces Français Libres) and adopted the nom de guerre by which he's still known to these days: Jean-Pierre Melville. Born Jean-Pierre Grumbach and adopting the moniker “Melville” after his favorite American author, he fought as part of the French Resistance during WWII, and started making independent films The Rationalization: Jean-Pierre Melville was a French director who is often called the godfather of the French New Wave (Francois Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Claude Chabrol, et al) due to his use of location shooting & producing his films outside of the French film industry’s mainstream on shoestring budgets.
